Home School

The process of opting to home school changed with the passage of HB209 in the 2025 Utah legislative session. Parents/guardians no longer need to submit a signed affidavit as part of the home school process. Instead, HB209 states that "when a parent withdraws an enrolled school-age child from school for the purpose of home-schooling, or chooses not to enroll a school-age child, the parent shall provide a one-time initial notification, that may include a letter of intent, to the local school board of the school-age child's district of residence."

Parents/guardians who submitted a home school affidavit prior to May 7, 2025 do not need to resubmit notice to the Jordan School District.

To submit your initial notification, please send an email to homeschool@jordandistrict.org with the following information:

  • Parent/guardian name
  • Current address (used to verify residency in the Jordan School District)
  • Names of students who will be homeschooling
  • Dates of birth and/or current grade of students who will be homeschooling

Utah Code 53G-5-204(5)(a)(i) requires the District to "maintain a record of the notification"; the information requested above allows us to do this and to know when your student is no longer of school age so that the home school record can be removed.

When you send your email, you will receive an automated reply confirming your submission. This response serves as your record of notifying the Jordan School District, as required by Utah code. If additional information is needed, you may receive a follow-up email.

As a reminder (and as outlined in Utah Code 53G-6-204(5)(b)), the school board of the Jordan School District and the local school of enrollment are not liable for the education or services of the school-age child whose parent/guardian withdraws them to home school. Additionally, per Utah Code 53G-6-204(2), the parent/guardian of the school-age child who attends a home school is solely responsible for the selection of instructional materials and textbooks; the time, place, and method of instruction; and the evaluation of home school instruction.

Parents/guardians who are interested in identifying the knowledge, skills, and competencies that a student is recommended to attain by grade level and subject area may refer to the Utah Core Standards.
